Wow! I am amazed by your story. I am presently looking into have a CI and another one (if all goes well with the first) a year later. I am trying to figure out which company to go with. I am in the process of being tested to qualify. I'm pretty sure I do - I have almost normal hearing at the low frequencies and profound hearing at high frequencies - my hearing drops off dramatically and quickly. I have worn hearing aids for over 30 years. I am 64 years old. I have been told I am a very, very good speech reader. But, if I can't see a person's face to "speech read," I can't understand most of what they say, although I can hear them if they are near me.
I am wondering which company you went with for your CI: Cochlear, AB, or Med-El. I am impressed that you were able to understand speech so quickly. I am willing to put in as much time as needed to do "homework" to practice listening to software on the computer and to books on tape - anything to get better at speech understanding
Any pointers you can give me about choosing a company would be most appreciated! Thanks!
